As El Paso continues to expand eastward, Montana Commons provides critical retail and office infrastructure for a high-traffic highway area. The project involved installing over 4,000 feet of drainage infrastructure, designed to harmonize the private development’s runoff needs with the public-sector highway-widening project adjacent to the site. For a commercial development on a growing corridor, the drainage had to serve the retail site today and interface cleanly with the expanded roadway of tomorrow.

The Challenge: Coordinating Private and Public Infrastructure
The defining challenge was coordination: the site’s drainage had to interface correctly with the future grades of the expanded highway, so that private runoff and public infrastructure worked together rather than in conflict. A high-traffic corridor with increasing impervious surface area demanded a high-velocity conveyance path, and any misalignment with the state’s highway plans would risk costly utility relocation after the expansion. The system had to be planned around infrastructure that did not yet exist.
